Support the Shepherd Program!

The Shepherd Program

The Shepherd Program is a wonderful ministry that provides people in the Wakefield/Brookfield area with rides to medical appointments when they, because of a medical or physical condition, are unable to drive themselves and have no other means of transportation.

The First Congregational Church of Wakefield, United Church of Christ, sponsors this program, but our drivers come from other churches, as well as our own, and from the community at large.

When people need a ride to a medical appointment, they call the church office at 522-3189 and leave a message on the church answering machine.  One of our administrators returns the call and confirms the ride.

There is no charge for this service, and the drivers do not accept gas money or gratuities.  However, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Wakefield, United Church of Christ, and earmarked for the Shepherd Program.  In that way, we are able to periodically supply our drivers with gas cards.

For information, or to see if you qualify for the program as either a driver or a rider, please call the church office at 522-3189.

Workshop Series: The Public Reading of Scripture

Do you enjoy reading scripture out loud during the worship service, and want to enhance your abilities?  Would you like to give public scripture reading a try, but haven’t felt confident enough to do so?  Join us, then, for a series of two workshops on the public reading of scripture.  We will discuss how to introduce scriptural readings, how to read them so as to enhance the understanding of the listeners, how best to comport oneself while reading scripture, and how best to prepare to do so.

The workshops will be led by Mary and will be offered on two consecutive Sundays:  October 28th and November 4th, at from 9 to 9:45 a.m.  The coffee and tea will be on and we hope you will join in!   Please let Mary know if you plan to attend; her email is

A Lay Preachers Workshop

A Lay Preachers Workshop

Have you ever wondered what it takes to put a sermon together and deliver it to the congregation? Have you ever wanted to offer a sermon?

The Diaconate invites you to a series of training sessions by our Rev. Mary to learn to do just that.

This will be an in-depth study series over the fall and winter months, culminating in a retreat.

As soon as we know how many are interested a schedule of dates will be sent out.

So step up to an intellectual adventure and talk to (or e-mail) Titia Bozuwa or Donna Ackerman!
