Greetings and Converational Phrases in the Shona Language Mangwanani = Good Moming Masikatee = Good Aftemoon Manheru = Good Evening Mhoroie = Hello (to more than one person to indicate respect) Titambire = We1come! (a jubuilant greeting given to welcome someone into your home) Tinotenda = Thank you. Makadini = How are you? Mhuri Yakadini = How is the family? Vanofara = All are well. Maswera sei? = How did you spend the day? Muve nezuva rakanaka = Have a nice day. Ndafara Kukuzivai = It was nice to know you. Tichawonana zvakare = We will see each other again. Chisarai = Goodbye. In Zimbabwe, age is celebrated. Living to an older age means you have done well. It would not be considered impolite to ask another person their age as the speaker would want to know if you are a contemporary or ifyou are older. Very important to show respect to an older person. Unje makore mangani? = How old are you? Usually you do not use a person's name but the name of their oldest child in a greeting. Example: How are you mother or father of ___________? Makadini mayva ___________? How are you, mother of ___________? Makadini babava ___________? How are you, father of ___________?
